Design the cover of a book using handmade techniques.
Fade | Nostalgia | Delicacy
I chose to design the book cover for Murakami's Norwegian Wood, a beautifully crafted coming of age book delving into the protagonist's memories of nostalgia, love and loss. A main theme surrounds suicide and mental health, unafraid to explore the delicacy of each character's emotion and state of mind.
The forest which informs the Cover design is an important backdrop for the unfolding events. I used bleach and washing soda to strip leaves of their colour, creating skeleton leaves. The bare bones of the leaves and the frailty of their form represent the themes of life's beauty and fragility.
